Ride A Pet Mistakes to Avoid as a Beginner
Most early progress in Ride A Pet is lost to a handful of repeatable decisions rather than to bad luck. Each of the nine mistakes below is tied to a number in the game's published data, so you can check your own play against it.

1. Riding your fastest pet to farm money
Income comes from the pet you are riding, and speed and income do not scale together. The clearest example sits at the top of the ladder: Kitsune has 1 billion speed but 90 million income, while Dragon has 300 million speed and 300 million income.
Reverse it too. Phoenix has 1,000,000 speed — 300 times less than Dragon — but 100,000 income against Dragon's 300 million. Fourteen times less money from a pet that feels slower to replace.
Keep two pets and swap deliberately: the fast one to reach egg spawns, the rich one to bank cash.
2. Ranking pets by hatch rarity
Rarity tells you how hard something was to hatch, not how good it is. Spider is the standard counter-example: 1 in 25,000 with only 3,690 speed, yet 129 jump.
That jump beats Horse (108), Shark (114) and Lion (120) — all rarer on paper in the sense that they feel like later progressions, and all worse at clearing terrain. Rank by the stat you need.
The tier list ranks every pet by real speed, income and jump rather than by rarity band.
3. Spending a storm on a starter pet
Mutations are permanent on the pet they land on, and a pet can only hold one. Shocked is x2, Volted x3, Rage x4, Void x10 and Eternal x100.
A x100 Eternal on a Snail produces a fast Snail. The same Eternal on a Fox or above produces a pet that competes with the endgame. Since a stronger mutation replaces a weaker one automatically, parking a good pet on the Mutation Ranch across several storms can only improve it.
Never park anything you plan to replace this week — see the mutations guide.
4. Rebirthing as soon as you can afford it
Rebirth resets your Coins and your temporary Luck Multiplier, and grants +1x Money Multiplier and +1 Pet Slot. The cost is real: it takes your cash with it.
The test is not affordability, it is recovery speed. Rebirth when you can climb back to your previous money level much faster than the first time. If a rebirth feels like starting the game over, it was too early.
The ladder starts at $1M with a Horse and reaches $15.6Qa with a Kitsune — the higher rungs also demand a specific pet, which is covered in the rebirth guide.
5. Buying radars out of tier order
A radar tracks exactly one egg rarity tier, and radars cannot be toggled off once purchased. Buy the tier above the eggs you are actually farming and you have spent your money on a filter you cannot remove.
Match the radar to your current stage instead: Advanced $50 (Rare) at the start, Jewel $3,000 (Epic) next, Royal $20,000 (Legendary), Magic $300,000 (Mythic), Angelic $7M (Divine) and Eternal $30M (Ethereal).
Leave Auto-Buy on so the radar restocks whenever it is available — prices and tiers are on the gear page.
6. Buying food by XP instead of XP per coin
The bigger foods are not better value, they are faster. Compare XP per coin: Grass is 500 XP for $10 (50 XP per coin), Bone 10,000 XP for $1,500 (6.7 per coin), Magic Apple 300,000 XP for $7M (0.04 per coin) and Dragonfruit 1,000,000 XP for $30M (0.03 per coin).
Grass is roughly 1,600 times more efficient per coin than Dragonfruit. Early on, spending on the premium foods is the fastest way to stay poor. Buy the big foods only to save real time, once money is no longer the constraint.
7. Ignoring the free friend boost
Inviting friends grants a money boost for playing together, and it costs nothing. Community guides treat it as the single biggest early game money multiplier.
It compounds with your rebirth Money Multiplier, so the earlier you have it running the more it is worth across your whole save. Set it up before optimising anything else — the money guide puts it in order.
8. Never checking the in-game Index
Egg spawns last roughly 20 seconds and reset on about an 8-minute cycle. Riding across the map towards an egg that has already despawned is the most common way to waste a session.
The in-game Index shows how many of each egg are currently spawned. Check it before committing to a route rather than after.
9. Fixing a jump problem with more speed
If you keep failing to reach a platform, more speed will not help — jump will. Jump values span 75 to 170 across the documented pets, and the low end is genuinely low: Elephant has 75 and Sloth 77.
Kangaroo (125) and Spider (129) are early pets with jump values that beat far later ones, including Giraffe at 83 and TRex at 100. Keep one high-jump pet in your inventory as a tool rather than riding it everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest mistake beginners make in Ride A Pet?
Farming money while riding the fastest pet instead of the richest one. Income and speed are separate stats: Kitsune has 1B speed but 90M income, while Dragon has 300M speed and 300M income.
Should I buy the expensive food in Ride A Pet?
Only to save time, never to save money. Grass gives 50 XP per coin, Bone 6.7, Magic Apple 0.04 and Dragonfruit 0.03 — so the premium foods cost roughly 1,600 times more per XP than Grass.
Why can't I remove a radar in Ride A Pet?
Radars cannot be toggled off once purchased — each one permanently tracks a single egg rarity tier. That is why buying a radar for a tier above the eggs you are farming wastes the money and clutters your screen.
